NovaStar 5

Introduction

This is the documentation for the NovaStar 5 Administrator, which is the web application that has traditionally been used to edit and view NovaStar database contents.

TriLynx Systems is in the process of transitioning non-administration users away from this software in favor of the Operator software, data web services, and other web applications that use NovaStar data. The Administrator should be used by flood warning system administrators to configure and maintain the NovaStar 5 system.

"NovaStar 5", "NovaStar5", and "NovaStar" are used interchangeably in this documentation.

The legacy URLs used to access NovaStar 5 documentation and data are being transitioned to a more general design as shown in the following table. The URLs shown below assume that the documentation for different components is available on the same web server as this documentation. The actual server names and corresponding IP addresses will of course vary by system.

NovaStar System Component URL to Documentation
Administrator

For maintainers of the data collection and flood warning system.
http://server/novastar/doc/administrator/user/

Because the Administrator is an advanced too to maintain the system, some users are typically also system administrators.
NovaStar Core System

Individual program documentation.

Operator

For decision-makers and optionally the public.

How to Use This Documentation

The manual is a reference for the Administrator software and provides a comprehensive description of user interface features. The Administrator provides features to view and edit data and configure the system to perform automated tasks including data collection, data import and export, and data product generation. NovaStar informs decision-making processes by providing accurate, meaningful and timely data for emergency response and post-event analysis.

This documentation is an online form of the original PDF documentation and will be updated as improvements are made to the software and documentation.

  • Part I of this documentation (see User sections) describes the web application features that allow any user to view, analyze and plot data using the following features:
  • Part II (see Operator and Administrator sections) describes the system configuration process for system administrators and also includes information, particularly at the beginning of each section, that can be useful for users (operators) who are able to view (but not edit) the displays and information products that have been configured by the system administrator to organize and map data and configure alarms. Note that the term "Operator" refers to the user role and is also being used for the Operator software tool - the Operator software is an alternative to the "Operator" features of the Administrator software.

Each documentation section relates specifically to each of the available program "pages" that allow performing tasks within NovaStar. Working through the manual sequentially is likely to be unnecessary for users who are familiar with the NovaStar base station software, and information about how to proceed with any page can be found in the section of this manual named after the page in question.

Use the navigation menu provided on the left side of the page to navigate the documentation sections within the full document. Use the navigation menu provided on the right side of the page to navigate the documentation sections with a page. The navigation menus may not be displayed if the web browser window is narrow or if viewing on a mobile device, in which case look for a menu icon to access the menus. Use the search feature to find documentation matching the search words.
